<p>But make no mistake about it, physical training is about becoming an improved human, better suited to meet the challenges of sport, work and life with excellence under the greatest amount of circumstances.</p>
<p>Physical training is not about maximizing muscle growth so you look good in your t-shirt or the ability to sustain long, monotonous aerobic activity.</p>
<p>To become a better human, you must use your physical training for physical fitness optimization&#8230; not physical skill maximization.</p>
<p>Physical fitness optimization is the acceptable and deliberate compromise of competence and ability to perform in ALL the areas of cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness to produce optimum performance results under the greatest amount of circumstances</p>
<p>Yes&#8230; physical fitness optimization is the understanding that true physical fitness is a compromise.</p>
<p>Your fitness level is comprised of your ability to perform using all the physical abilities mentioned in a seamless and coordinated fashion to complete any task at any given point in time.</p>
<p>Physical fitness is not, and should not, be measured by the physical skill maximization of just one of these skills.</p>
<p>True physical fitness has to do with your physical ability to perform the widest variety of tasks under the greatest diversity of circumstances&#8230; not maximizing one physical ability to perform one task under controlled circumstances.</p>
<p>Strangely, the trend seems to be to use physical training to maximize one physical ability at the expense of all others&#8230; actually making the person less fit.</p>
<p>If you spend all your training time improving only one facet of fitness&#8230; your weaknesses will greatly outnumber your strength.</p>
<p>You will have become so specialized that you are unfit for most circumstances encountered in sport, work and life&#8230; and I am sure that was not your goal when starting a physical fitness training program.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s get one thing straight&#8230;</p>
<p>I am not against muscle growth and aerobic capacity&#8230; I am against the fitness industry&#8217;s unbalanced focus on muscle growth and aerobic capacity at the expense of true physical fitness.</p>
<p>Isolated muscle exercises performed on limited motion machines combined with extended aerobic sessions is not the path to strength, conditioning and fitness excellence&#8230; no matter what the fitness industry&#8217;s marketing machine says.</p>
<p>Commit yourself to strength, conditioning and fitness optimization if your goal is to develop performance improvements in all the 10 physical skills and produce a body that performs as good as it looks.</p>
<p>If your current physical fitness workout program is designed more for physical skill maximization&#8230; change it!</p>
<p>Because there is one thing that I know for sure&#8230;</p>
<p>If you have functional strength, superior conditioning and fitness excellence there will be times in sport, work and life that you need them&#8230; and if you don&#8217;t, there will be times when you wish you did.

<p>If you are in the segment of golfers, have you experienced a rapid decrease in driving distance and consistency?</p>

This is a perfect example of how fixing a physical limitation with fitness for golf can literally transform your golf swing and eliminate ALL golf swing faults.</p>
<p>For every swing fault, there is a physical limitation causing it. I&#8217;ve said this for years. If you hear it anywhere else, someone has stolen my concept and approach. <p>You will most likely be met with the &#8220;deer caught in the headlights&#8221; stare accompanied by nonsensical stammering.</p>
<p>If you do get an answer, it will most likely be slanted toward the specific abilities of the person asked.</p>
<p>For example&#8230;</p>
<p>A marathon runner will define fitness in terms of muscular and cardiorespiratory endurance&#8230; A power-lifter will define fitness in terms of absolute strength&#8230; A bodybuilder will define fitness in terms of muscle size and definition&#8230; etc.</p>
<p>But the overwhelming majority of people participating in a physical fitness program are not professional athletes concerned with the improvement of only one physical ability.</p>
<p>Therefore, basing your definition of fitness on one specific physical skill does not lead to a universal definition of fitness.</p>
<p>The fact is, your physical fitness success will be determined by your definition of fitness&#8230; So take some time to make sure you have a clear fitness definition.</p>

<p>Fitness is not about the &#8220;maximization&#8221; of one particular physical skill at one particular point in time, but rather the &#8220;optimization&#8221; of all physical skills at any given time.</p>
<p>Fitness is a compromise of all the different physical skills that make up human activity.</p>
<p>Look at it this way&#8230;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s say all of the physical skills were tested separately.</p>
<p>Some specialized athletes would score very high on some physical skills&#8230; and very low on others.</p>
<p>But a person that personified true, universal fitness would score well on all of the physical skills&#8230; without necessarily being the best at any one skill.</p>
<p>Here is an EXCELLENT Fitness Definition&#8230;</p>
<p>The acceptable and deliberate compromise of competence and ability to perform in ALL the areas of cardiorespiratory endurance, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, accuracy and toughness to produce optimum performance results under the greatest amount of circumstances.</p>
<p>Not only is universal fitness a compromise of all the physical abilities&#8230; but it is the over-all ability to integrate all of the physical abilities and flow from one ability to the next in a seamless fashion to successfully complete a task.</p>
<p>So, what would adopting this definition of fitness do for you?</p>
<p>Your physical fitness training program would be assessed according to how well it &#8220;optimized&#8221; all the physical skills and not just how well it &#8220;maximized&#8221; one particular skill at the expense of all others.</p>
<p>Basically, structuring your physical training to improve all the physical skills of this fitness definition would enable you to greatly improve over-all physical performance in a wider variety of activities.</p>

<p>So you have home gym equipment and/or a health club membership, and you may even be using them on a regular basis. But, how do you put together an exercise plan that not only helps you improve your body&#8217;s health, but also do it in a way that fits the rest of your life?</p>
<p>1. Define what your goals are. Are you looking to lose weight? Gain muscle? Tone up what you already have? You&#8217;ll need to decide what it is you want to accomplish before you can define what your plan is. </p>
<p>2. Understand that you need to start slowly. Your body will adjust quickly to the changes that will take place as you get into a regular exercise program &#8211; but overdoing things at the beginning will have the opposite effect you are looking for. Start with a simple program, and build onto it as your fitness improves.</p>
<p>3. Decide how much time you can spend per day. And, and dedicate yourself to using that time for your fitness workouts. Keep in mind that committing two percent of your day will get you to where you need to be!</p>
<p>4. Write it down beforehand. Plan out your workouts, and keep track of your results. Pick your exercises, pick your weight for the exercise, pick your number of sets / number of reps, pick your time that you&#8217;ll do cardio, and commit to it. </p>
<p>5. When doing your planning &#8211; break up your routine. For example &#8211; if you&#8217;re doing weight training, don&#8217;t try to train all your muscle groups in one session. Rather, schedule your chest and arm exercises for one session, back and shoulder exercises for the next, and legs &amp; abdominals for the third. Keeping variety in your training will not only help keep you motivated, it also helps keep you from overtraining and getting hurt.</p>
<p>6. See your doctor. Before you put your plan into action, talk to your doctor, and make sure that what you&#8217;ve planned won&#8217;t hurt you, only help you!</p>
<p>7. Learn about your body. Learn about what muscles make up your body, and what exercises work the muscle groups you&#8217;d like to concentrate on. Learn about what the difference is between &#8220;cardio efficiency&#8221; and &#8220;burning fat&#8221;. For example, running on the treadmill at your peak speed, may build your cardiovascular system, but running at a much slower pace actually is better for training your body to burn fat. </p>
<p>Your plan is just that &#8211; yours. In the end, you&#8217;ll only get out of your plan what you put into it. And, the best way to create a successful plan is to create something that you&#8217;re not just comfortable with, but a plan that challenges you to push yourself just a little bit farther!
