The Importance of Securing Health Insurance Coverage for Your Family – 10675th Edition
One of the biggest topics under fire in this last presidential election was the question over making provisions for universal healthcare. While our current commander-in-chief has hope and a plan that we will see that vision enacted during his administration, it is still difficult and demanding to be able to obtain insurance today. In fact, many Americans see it as a useless bother.
Sadly, however, such an attitude can put some individuals and families in a very difficult position in the event of an emergency. Forgive my morbidity, but the assumption, “It will never happen to me,” could be one that destroys you and your family’s future, particularly in the financial realm.
One of the primary causes of out of control debt leading ultimately to bankruptcy is medical bills. Even young families where all members have a clean bill of health can be blindsided by illness or accidents. I am a perfect example of this–after one weekend spent out of state with my parents,
I came back with a sore throat and a headache which I presumed to be a result of fatigue and exposure to all kinds of germs in the airport. I took one day to “sleep it off,” and before I knew it, I was whimpering in a waiting room in my local urgent care center. It turned out I had developed pneumonia.
Think of the fact that many people without insurance hesitate in getting professional help because they are afraid of the exorbitant costs of adequate care when they have to foot the bill themselves.
In my case, had I not adequate insurance, I likely would not have gone into the urgent care center at all, figuring I could beat the disease myself with enough herbal tea and sleep. But pneumonia is not beaten so easily–if my condition had gotten much worse, I could have ended up in the emergency room, which would have resulted in a significantly inflated bill.
While health insurance is vital for unexpected medical issues like mine, great coverage isn’t exclusively a cushion for emergencies. There are many supplemental programs which pay an agreed upon amount, generally several thousand dollars (often between five and eight), when a couple has a child.
Many companies still pay if a pregnancy fails, which is never a pleasant thought, but the fact is that it does happen. Using that money to pay off the bills that have accumulated and to make a general financial recovery can be a great comfort in a dark time.
No matter your age or situation in life, adequate health insurance coverage is vital. It may seem difficult to acquire at times, but if you do careful research, compare companies, and budget carefully, you will be able to secure peace of mind for yourself and your family.
